CHAPTER TEN~ MAYBELLE

The next morning, the dream was gone, and so was any recollection of what it was about. I remembered waking with a feeling that I wasn’t alone. It was enough to chase me from beneath the warm covers, and to send Lois tumbling from my side to the foot of the bed with an irritated growl.

I pulled out casual clothes and headed for the shower, planning my next move for the day. I didn’t have to be to work until after eleven, and one look out the window at the rain pattering down against the glass was all the hint I needed that I wasn’t working in the vineyard today.

A half hour later, with a mug of coffee in the cup holder, I pulled down the drive towards town. My tummy gave a grumble, and I reasoned that where I was going was just a block down from Java’s. It was all the excuse I needed to stop afterward.

But first, I had a few questions for the Bussards. Barbie was most likely at school, but hopefully, since it was in the middle of the week in the morning, it wouldn’t be too busy for one or both of her parents to talk to me.

The rain had all but stopped when I pulled up and parked. I took it as a good sign when I got out that there was nobody lined up outside on the sidewalk. The inside of the shop was likewise nearly deserted. Bessy Bussard was manning the counter when I went in. She was working alone to help the three customers in the shop, and Bob Bussard was nowhere around.

I was going to wait my turn, but she caught my eye and correctly guessed I wanted to talk. As I watched, she plopped what looked like three New York strips on the scale for an elderly woman. She glanced my way. “Bob is in the office in back. You can just go on back if you’d like to talk to him.”

I sent her an answering smile, already turning away. “Thanks, that would be great.”

The door to the office was open, and I stopped just outside, knocking on the jamb lightly to get his attention. He was buried in his computer, tapping away.

He looked up, waving me in when he recognized me.

I took a seat, and he returned his attention to his computer long enough to hit a couple more buttons.

He sat back and favored me with a weary smile. “Ms. Blume, it’s nice to see you. But I’m guessing this isn’t a social call.”

Smiling wryly, I admitted, “Sorry. I could just be by to take advantage of the meat deal and pick up some filet mignon for dinner,” I teased.

He winced. “That was Bessy that made that deal. I’d have made it at least a dollar ninety-nine a pound.”

I grinned. “A deal is a deal. But no, that’s not why I’m here. I was hoping you might answer a couple of questions for me regarding Ira’s murder.
